Dishwasher Making Noise in NJ? Here's What's Wrong

Grinding, rattling, or squealing during a dishwasher cycle usually means a pump, bearing, or spray arm issue. Learn what the sounds mean.

A noisy dishwasher is one of the most common service calls we receive across NJ. Most dishwasher noises are diagnosable without opening the machine — the type of sound and when it occurs during the cycle narrows down the cause significantly.

Grinding Noise

A grinding sound during the wash cycle, especially at the start, usually means something is caught in the wash pump impeller — a piece of broken glass, a bone fragment, or a hard plastic item that fell through the filter into the pump housing. Stop the cycle, remove the lower rack and spray arm, remove the filter assembly, and check for debris. If clearing debris doesn't stop the grinding, the pump impeller or bearing may be damaged.

Rattling

Rattling during the wash cycle is almost always a loading issue — dishes or utensils shifting and hitting each other or the spray arms. Check that items are secured and not blocking the spray arm rotation. A rattling that comes from below is usually the drain pump vibrating against the tub housing — often caused by debris in the pump.

Squealing or Whining

A high-pitched squeal during the wash cycle usually indicates the wash pump motor bearings are failing. This is a progressive failure — the noise will get louder over time until the motor seizes. Repair cost: $150–$280 for pump motor replacement.

Thumping

A rhythmic thump during the wash cycle is usually the spray arm hitting a dish or utensil that's sticking up too high, or a bent spray arm hitting the tub wall. Check the spray arms for cracks or warping (hard water deposits can cause warping in NJ) and ensure nothing is blocking their rotation.

Humming After Cycle

A hum that continues after the cycle ends is usually the drain pump running dry — either it's stuck on or a control board issue is keeping it energized. This needs a technician.

Grinding Noises: Pump and Chopper Plate

A grinding or crunching noise during a wash cycle in your NJ dishwasher typically comes from the drain pump or the chopper plate above it. Hard food debris — bone fragments, glass chips, or peach pits — can fall past the filter and reach the chopper plate, creating a grinding sound as the pump tries to process them. In NJ homes with garbage disposals on the same drain line, run the disposal before each dishwasher cycle to prevent backflow of food debris into the drain. Removing debris from the pump area requires disassembly of the lower spray arm and filter assembly.

Rattling During the Wash Cycle

Rattling during the wash cycle is almost always a loading issue rather than a mechanical problem. Lightweight plastic items in the top rack can tip and hit the spray arm. Glasses placed too close together rattle when the spray arm water pressure hits them. Silverware that extends through the basket grid into the spray arm path causes intermittent banging. Secure lightweight items with the tines of the rack before running a cycle. If rattling persists despite correct loading, the lower spray arm may be loose on its mount — an inexpensive repair.

Humming That Gets Louder Over Time

A continuous humming noise from your NJ dishwasher that gradually increases in volume over weeks or months typically indicates the circulation pump motor bearings are wearing. The circulation pump drives water through the spray arms throughout the wash and rinse cycles; as bearings degrade, friction increases and the motor works harder. Circulation pump replacement in New Jersey runs $180-$280 including labor. Ignoring a progressively louder dishwasher hum typically leads to complete pump failure within months, requiring the same repair under more urgent circumstances.
