Freezer Not Reaching Temperature

A freezer that is running but not getting cold enough (food is soft, ice cream is mushy, ice cubes are small or not forming) has a specific set of causes. Whether it is the freezer section of your refrigerator or a standalone chest or upright freezer in your NJ garage, here is how to diagnose the problem.

Refrigerator Freezer Section: Most Common Causes

  • Defrost system failure: This is the leading cause. Ice builds up on the evaporator coils inside the freezer compartment, blocking airflow. When the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fails, the defrost cycle does not run and ice accumulates until airflow stops completely. You may see heavy frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer.
  • Evaporator fan motor failure: This fan circulates cold air through both the freezer and refrigerator sections. When it fails, the freezer gets warmer and the fridge section may actually warm more than the freezer.
  • Condenser coils clogged: In NJ homes with pets, coils clog with pet hair rapidly. A completely clogged condenser coil can prevent the system from reaching freezer temperatures even though it runs continuously.

Standalone Freezers in NJ Garages

NJ homeowners with chest or upright freezers in unheated garages face the winter problem mentioned in our seasonal guide: below about 50°F ambient temperature, the thermostat cuts the compressor off because the space is already cold enough — but the insulated freezer may warm above safe temperatures. Only use freezers rated for garage/unheated space use outside.

A freezer that is not maintaining 0 degrees F (or below) is a food safety emergency — frozen food must be kept at 0 degrees F to prevent bacterial growth. At 10 to 20 degrees F, most frozen food will begin to thaw within 24 to 48 hours. At temperatures above 32 degrees F, frozen food is actively thawing and the clock is ticking. This guide covers all the common causes of freezer temperature failure in NJ homes.

Check the Basics First

Before calling for service: check that the freezer temperature setting has not been accidentally changed (check the thermostat or digital control panel), ensure the door seal is intact by checking for visible gaps or tears in the gasket, and verify that the freezer is not overpacked — air must be able to circulate inside the freezer for proper cooling. A completely packed freezer with no air circulation can have warm spots even if the cooling system is functioning correctly.

Common Causes of Freezer Not Freezing

Evaporator fan motor failure — The fan that circulates cold air inside the freezer fails. Without it, the compressor runs but cold air does not circulate and the freezer warms. You can test this by listening — if you hear the compressor but no fan, the fan motor has failed. Defrost system failure — Frost builds up on the evaporator coils until airflow is completely blocked. Signs: the back wall of the freezer is covered in thick frost. Condenser coil buildup — In NJ homes where the refrigerator is in an area with pet hair or carpet dust, condenser coils accumulate debris rapidly. Clean them every 6 months. Low refrigerant / refrigerant leak — Requires a certified technician with EPA 608 certification to diagnose and repair. ProFix NJ carries certified refrigerant technicians.
