Checking a range anti-tip bracket needs only a flashlight: with the cooktop and oven cool, look for the bracket behind or under a rear leg and confirm the range can't tilt forward when you grip the back edge. A freestanding range without an engaged bracket can tip if a child climbs on the open oven door or something heavy is set on it, so check it after any move, kitchen remodel or floor replacement.
Time: about 10 minutes · Difficulty: Easy · You'll need: a flashlight, your range's installation manual (or the model number to look it up)
Before you start
- •Make sure all burners and the oven are off and cool.
- •Remove pots, pans and anything sitting on the cooktop.
- •For a gas range, don't pull it away from the wall yourself. Moving it can strain or damage the gas connector, so leave any repositioning to a professional.
- •For an electric range, turn off its breaker before sliding it out, since the plug is behind it.
Steps
Step 1 — Know what you're looking for
An anti-tip bracket is a metal bracket screwed to the floor or the wall behind the range. One of the range's rear leveling legs slides into it, so the range can't lift at the back.
Step 2 — Look through the drawer space
On many ranges, you can pull out the storage or warming drawer completely and use a flashlight to see the rear legs. Check whether one rear leg is tucked under the bracket.
Step 3 — Do the tilt check
Grip the top rear edge of the range and gently try to tilt it forward, as many manufacturers' instructions describe. It should not lift more than very slightly. If it rocks forward easily, the bracket isn't engaged.
Step 4 — Check the bracket itself
If you can see the bracket, make sure it's firmly screwed down and not bent. Loose screws or a bracket left in the box after delivery are common findings.
Step 5 — Re-engage it (electric only)
On an electric range with the breaker off, slide the range back gently until the rear leg slips under the bracket, adjusting the leveling leg height per the manual if needed. Then redo the tilt check.
Step 6 — Reset and restore power
Replace the drawer, turn the breaker back on, and confirm the range is level so pans don't drift.
Didn't fix it?
If the bracket is missing, many manufacturers supply one with the range or offer it as a part, along with installation instructions for your model. For gas ranges, or if installing a bracket means drilling into a tile floor or a wall with unknown pipes, have it done professionally. Our range repair technicians can install or adjust the bracket while checking the range. If you're cleaning up the cooktop while you're at it, see how to clean a glass cooktop.
How often to do this
Check it once after installation and again any time the range is moved, the floor is redone or you notice the range shifting.
From Kevin: I find ranges in kitchens without the bracket engaged more often than I'd like, usually after a floor job or a quick swap. It's a small piece of metal that matters a lot in a home with kids.
