How to Change an Oven Light Bulb Without Breaking the Cover

Here's how to change an oven light bulb safely: cut the power, let the oven cool, remove the glass cover, fit the right appliance bulb and test it.

Changing an oven light bulb is a safe homeowner job once the power is off at the breaker (or the range is unplugged) and the oven is cold: remove the glass cover and fit an oven-rated appliance bulb that matches the type and wattage in your manual. You'll need it the first time the light stays dark with the door open or the light switch on.

Time: about 15 minutes · Difficulty: Easy · You'll need: the correct replacement bulb, a rubber glove or jar opener pad, a soft cloth, a flashlight

Before you start

  • •Turn off the range's circuit breaker or unplug the range. Flipping the light switch off isn't enough.
  • •Let the oven cool completely. Bulbs and glass covers stay hot long after cooking.
  • •Remove the oven racks so you can reach the light easily.
  • •Use only a bulb rated for oven temperatures. A regular household bulb isn't built for that heat.

Steps

Step 1 — Find the bulb type

Check your manual or the old bulb's base for the type and wattage. Many ovens use a small appliance bulb, while others use a halogen bulb behind a flat or square cover.

Step 2 — Remove the glass cover

Round covers usually twist off counterclockwise; a rubber glove gives you a better grip. Some covers are held by a wire clip or screws instead. Don't pry against the glass.

Step 3 — Remove the old bulb

Unscrew a standard appliance bulb counterclockwise. A halogen bulb usually pulls straight out of its socket.

Step 4 — Install the new bulb

Screw in or press in the new bulb gently. Hold halogen bulbs with a cloth or tissue, since oils from your fingers can shorten their life.

Step 5 — Replace the cover

Wipe the glass cover clean and refit it snugly. The cover protects the bulb and socket from heat and grease, so don't run the oven without it.

Step 6 — Restore power and test

Turn the breaker back on or plug the range back in, then switch on the light.

Didn't fix it?

If the new bulb doesn't light, the problem may be the socket, the door light switch, the wiring or a control board. Don't probe the socket. If the oven also has heating or display problems, book oven repair. While the range is cool and powered off, it's a good time to check that it's secured; see how to check a range anti-tip bracket.

How often to do this

Only when the bulb burns out. Keep a spare oven-rated bulb on hand so you're not cooking in the dark.

From Kevin: Stuck covers are the biggest frustration with this job. A rubber dish glove gives enough grip almost every time, without the risk of cracking the glass.
